Curriculum
The curriculum at Kelvin Hall is designed to give every student the platform they need to go on to study at college or in Sixth Form, or to go into training when they leave school. We work hard to ensure that every child, whatever their ability, achieves their full potential through a broad and balanced curriculum.
Key Stage Three
At key stage three (Years 7-9) the curriculum includes thematic approaches to learning in addition to focusing on core subjects.
The curriculum includes:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Technology and Art
- French, German and Spanish
- Geography, History and RE
- Music and Drama
- ICT and PE
In years 7 to 9 pupils also follow a PSHE course focusing on health education and citizenship.
Key Stage Four
At key stage four (Years 10 and 11) all pupils study a core course, which includes:
- English Language and Literature
- Humanities – either History or Geography
- Mathematics
- Science
- A modern foreign language in French or Spanish
- RE or ICT
- PE
Pupils complete their studies by choosing from an options list to gain further GCSE qualifications, such as a second language, technology, art, music, photography and philosophy and ethics.
The school also offers pupils a choice from a range of GCSE equivalent vocational qualifications such as BTEC, (certificate and diploma) COPE, NCFE, NVQ, Applied GCSE and young apprenticeships through to foundation learning opportunities.
We work closely with a number of off-site providers and offer courses such as engineering, animal care, construction, hair and beauty, public services, creative and media, sociology and psychology to name a few.
These courses are challenging and develop valuable skills in communication, leadership, teamwork, problem solving, business awareness and entrepreneurship. This range of subjects not only stimulates and interests pupils during their key stage four studies, but will give them the foundation they need to make their own career or educational choices when they leave Kelvin Hall School.
In addition to timetabled lessons, each year group will be involved in themed days such as business enterprise, delivered through PSHE courses.
